Vertical Integration Brings Prosperity for Villages
July 16, 2014
Vertical Integration is one of the keys to building rural prosperity. The example in this picture focuses on the integration of peanut processing. Peanut oil is the cooking oil of choice throughout large areas of West Africa. Farmers get $385 per ton for raw unshelled peanuts. Processing peanuts brings in much more than this - refined peanut oil gets $2000 per ton retail. Peanut butter gets $6000 per ton. And packaging for retail sale increases the profit even further.
